Everett Anthony Smith Sr. (Tony) has coached at the Plainfield Tsunami Track and Field Club since 1998, before his oldest son, then three years old, became a member of the team. He assumed the head coach position in 2003.

Coach Tony was born on May 25, 1959, the third child of Willie & Elizabeth Smith in Newark, New Jersey. In 1967, his family moved to Plainfield. Coach Tony spent the major part of his school years in the Plainfield School District. He was a member of the National Honor Society and the Plainfield High School Track Team. He and his team members, then known as the “Dust Boys”, were State Champions for three years, 1975-1977. Upon graduation, he began his career building and maintaining greenhouses. In 1980, he became an inspector for a local engineering firm in Scotch Plains. Furthering his education, he took courses in the civil engineering field, such as land surveying, construction estimation, septic design, computer-aided drafting (CAD), and various others. Coach Tony currently serves as an Assistant to the Township Engineer in Hillsborough Township, where he has been employed since 1989.

In June of 1981, Coach Tony married the love of his life, Yolanda Stancil. Together they have three children, Christina, Everett Jr. “AJ” and Jordan, as well as two grandsons, Royce and Ryan. Coach Tony is also an ordained Minister. He serves as one of the Presiding Elders at the Church of the Living God, Pentecostal Tabernacle under the leadership of Pastor Malinda Wyatt Collins in Plainfield. Coach Tony brings his track experience, love for the sport and deep faith to helping children achieve mentally, physically and spiritually. One of his favorite sayings is, “I don’t care if you ever win; my goal is to help you get better”.
